Reflecting on 30 years

I founded AKQA thirty years ago, and it has been my chief endeavour ever since.

In the time that has elapsed, AKQA has been honoured with 83 Agency of the Year wins, 11 Most Loved Workplace certifications, and many more awards, including 117 Cannes Lions and 97 D&AD Pencils.

Today’s triumphs can quickly become tomorrow’s traditions. Yet, you never feel like you’ve done enough because the care this vocation asks of you — and which you want to give — is limitless.

I hope you agree that AKQA has always protected dreams, vision, and values and aimed to create the labours of love, the sachets of delight, the pockets of excitement — the kind of work that rivets people in unexpected ways.

Ideas are eternal, universal, and truthful, especially when there is a sincere commitment and devotion to bring them into being.

Two recent ideas that give me good feelings are our inspirational initiative Sounds Right, which allows artists to credit Nature so that royalties from natural sounds can fund conservation projects, and the new Delta Air Lines app, which we redesigned to make life easier.

Ideas are the messengers of potential. They are the seeds of hope that drive out the darkness and the antidote to despair.

Ideas are the all-encompassing force that holds the world together.

It is within ideas that we all find one another.
