Nusuk

A spiritual companion

A once in a lifetime experience.

Insight

When embarking on the journey of a lifetime, its sacredness is overshadowed by its logistics.

The pilgrimage to Makkah and Medina in Saudi Arabia has always held profound significance for every Muslim around the world, yet it has always been complex and fragmented. As the pandemic imposed more regulations on the faithful, Nusuk emerged to facilitate, integrate, and elevate the end-to-end experience.

Idea

Your guiding light.

With a potential 2 billion visitors, Nusuk is the spiritual companion for all Muslims embarking on their Hajj or Umrah pilgrimages. The concept of light informed the UX and UI redesign, creating an app ecosystem that helped guide visitors through their entire journey, from travel and permit bookings to spiritual guidance.

At the heart of Islam, the Kaaba in Mecca is revered as the House of Allah, symbolising unity, spirituality, and the ultimate destination of the pilgrimage. To honour its significance, a compass was designed to guide Muslims to the Kaabah using elements inspired by the sacred fabric and prayers that adorn it. This compass illuminates upon alignment, serving not just as a directional guide but as a beacon of spiritual connection.

A personal journey needed a personalised experience. In designing Nusuk, the ambition was not just to build a tool but to craft a companion for your pilgrimage that doesn’t distract from your spiritual journey but stands ready to guide you whenever you need it.

From guided rituals which remind the pilgrims to perform the relevant prayer, to receiving a customised completion certificate that lets one reflect on their journey. These tailored experiences put the visitor at the centre of the experience, enabling pilgrims to fully immerse themselves in their Hajj or Umrah journeys.

Inspired by the intricate Islamic patterns adorning the gates to the holy sites, the design of the permits, central to the app’s function, reflects the unique architecture of each location. By incorporating these distinctive design elements, the permits serve as functional tools and meaningful symbols of each pilgrim’s journey. This approach ensures that the essence of the holy sites is felt even before the visitor sets foot in the Makkah, thus enriching their overall experience.

Impact

Spiritual and seamless.

The app has helped millions of Muslims to focus on what truly matters for Hajj and Umrah, their faith. With quicker booking times and easy access to services, pilgrims can now enjoy a smoother, more spiritually enriching experience. This leap in technology not only modernises Saudi Arabia’s religious tourism but also sets a new standard for pilgrimage management globally.
